The prosopography of the gens Servilia represents a debated topic, analysed lastly by E. Badian and by G. Alföldy. Taking the cue from the identity of the moneyer C. Servilius M.f., this paper aims to demonstrate that the Servilii Vatiae did not use such cognomen between the II and I century BC – at least systematically and with self-representative purpose. As a consequence, some methodological and prosopographic issues concerning the descendants of the Servilii Gemini will be reconsidered.
