Abstract

Publication of a lease of vegetable crops dating from 498 in the papyrus collection of the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek. The landowner Flavius Sarapion son of Martyrius is a soldier in the cavalry unit of the Mauri Scutarii based in Hermopolis and has already been attested as a lessor in SB VIII 9776 (496). The modest rent of 1 solidus is to be repaid in three installments, and the lessee is required to provide as an extra gratuity bundles of the medicinal plant scammonia.
