When Two Fragments Meet: A Funerary Stela for Two People from Roman Egypt (Nikopolis)

Abstract

Join of two previously published fragments of a funerary stela erected in honour of a veteran of legio II Traiana fortis and one of his relatives from the military burial site of Nikopolis in Egypt (Alexandria, Graeco-Roman Museum, inv. 21623 and 21627). The stela, dating to the first half of the third century AD, bears a representation of the deceased and contains two inscriptions, carved underneath the relief in two columns. Few other veteran stelae have been discovered on the site, which suggests that most veterans moved away after their discharge.
