A bronze plate from Olympia reports in Achaean letters, probably of Sybaris that an Alkisthenes became proxenos of the Eleans and an (Elean) Xennias was his guarantor. The inscription of ca. 550–510 BC is the second oldest example of the numerous Greek proxeny documents. There is evidence of a proxenos of the Eleans also in Sparta and in Athens. It appears to be a trait of successful Elean politics to establish official representatives in the most powerful states.
