Abstract

Two fragmentary tombstones, recently found in Carnuntum, show the first time the phrase domo Iudaeus; dating end 1st/beginning 2nd century. One inscription belonged to a certain M. Mulvius, salesman (negotians), the other one to P. Aemilius Verecundus and his son P. Aemilius [-]vus, dedicated by the grandson respectively the son. The article tries to show on the basis of epigraphical as well as iconographical arguments that domo Iudaeus is meant as an indication of the provenance and does not mean that the persons mentioned were Jews.
