Zu durch Herodot überlieferten Schriften griechischer Geographen

Abstract

Herodotus’ two lists of peoples in the Persian Empire (3;90-94 and 7;61-95) have so many correspondences that they must derive from the same source material.  Arguments are advanced to show that these lists represent distinct reworkings (not by Herodotus) of an original geographical tract which appears to date from before ca. 510 B.C. and to be distinct from Hecataeus’ Geography.  If so; then the historical value of both lists for the period which in Herodotus they purport to describe is low.  They nonetheless have great value for understanding early Greek intellectual history.
