Personal Names in Theocritus: A Form of arte allusiva

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to show that onomastic evidence as the chief tool of  prosopography in ancient history can be extended to poetry to reveal various aspects  of life, literature and history . Theocritus' poems are full of characters whose  multifarious personalities the poet alludes to chiefly through diction.
