Abstract

This article offers a perspective on the traditional debate over the nature of the legal order in the Roman Empire, the role of Roman law in Roman provincial jurisdiction and the status of local laws and practices under Roman rule. These questions are explored through a series of case studies of papyrological evidence from Roman Egypt, including the jurisdictional edict of Petronius Mamertinus (SB XII 10929) and the well-known petition of Dionysia (P. Oxy. II 237).
