Abstract

P.Vindob. K. 4712 is a documentary letter written by the well-known administrator Shenoute. This; as well as the places mentioned in this text; makes it possible to locate the letter in the nome of Hermopolis and to date it to the middle of the 7th century. The letter mentions the requisition of 7000 sacks of dates by a higher administrative level. Ecclesiastical bodies have to provide part of this. The letter is summarily addressed to the superiors of the institutions listed at the end of the letter. The respective amounts to be delivered by these institutions are specified in this list. The dates are to be delivered to the harbour. From there the dates will be transported by ship. Thus; this letter gives insight into the administration of the region as well as into the relative financial capacities of the institutions mentioned.
