The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the chrysophoria in the poleis of Greece and Asia Minor in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. It examines the manifestations of the high honour of ‘wearing/bearing gold’ in different political, social and religious contexts. It is shown that the chrysophoria cannot generally be associated with one specific meaning; it implies a privilege whose exact implementation was determined locally within a given context.
