Abstract

The government of the Later Roman Empire tried to intervene in the social and
economic life by statutory regulations in order to stabilise and restore these. This, at least, has been maintained by J.-P. Waltzing and others, and is still considered to hold good, vide A. Demandt's Die Spätantike.
